From the Foggo Rd block of the Shadow Creek Vineyard in McLaren Flat, planted 1928. Sandy soils and a deep root system help this unirrigated survivor vineyard produce exceptional fruit. The 2023 example is a great contrast to the Smart Vineayrd wine from Clarendon, which is at a much higher elevation and is further away from the moderating effects of the Southern Ocean. Consequently, the Shadow Creek wine is more voluptous and generous than the tightly wound and Pinot-esque Smart Vineyard Grenache. 95 points - Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion; 95 points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front; 95 points - Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review.
